If your car says NO REMOTE DETECTED or NO KEY FOUND, or the fob only works once you're standing at the driver's door, a weak Cadillac key fob battery could be the cause.
That's a fix you can make yourself, and if the car won't start in the meantime, there's a backup spot in the cabin where it can read a weak fob.
Check the battery first. Your owner's manual lists a weak battery, distance from the car, and a blocked signal as the things to rule out, and it shows you how to replace the battery yourself. If a new battery doesn't help, test your spare fob. If neither fob works, or one is lost, it's time for a service visit.
If you have to walk closer to the car than you used to before the buttons respond, the battery may be getting weak. Some newer fobs work from as far as 197 feet away, so a fob that only works from a few steps out has lost a lot of range.
Many Cadillacs also show a message on the Driver Information Center, the display in the gauge cluster, when the battery runs low. It reads REPLACE BATTERY IN REMOTE KEY, or REPLACE BATTERY IN KEY on some newer models. Replace the battery when you see it.
If the battery gets weak enough, the car may not detect the fob at all when you try to start it.
It can mean the battery is weak. The car can also miss a fob that's asleep, blocked, or sitting on the charging pad, and each of those has its own fix.
| What you notice | What it can suggest | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| NO REMOTE DETECTED or NO KEY FOUND when you press the start button | The fob battery is weak, or something nearby is interfering with the signal | Start the car from the backup spot, then replace the fob battery as soon as you can |
| The car won't detect a fob that has sat untouched for a while, or shows KEY IN SLEEP MODE, MOVE KEY, THEN START | The fob's motion sensor has put it to sleep, which is a security feature on some fobs | Pick the fob up or move it slightly, then try starting the car again |
| NO KEY FOUND while the fob is sitting on the wireless charging pad | On some models, the charging pad interferes with the fob and the car may not start | Move the fob off the pad and keep it somewhere else in the cabin |
| The fob works in your driveway but not in a packed parking lot | Other vehicles or objects between you and the car can block the signal | Move closer or find a clearer line to the car before you assume the battery is dead |
| Neither fob starts the car, even from the backup spot, and the security light stays on | A problem with the car's theft-deterrent system, since both fobs fail the same way | The car needs service, so schedule a visit and bring every fob you have |
Use the mechanical key hidden in the fob to get in, then put the fob in the car's backup spot so it can be read even with a weak battery.
To get the key out, press the release button on the side of the fob near the bottom and slide it free. On some models, the driver's door lock sits under a small cap on the door handle. Pull the handle open, fit the key into the slot on the bottom of the cap, lift, and slide the cap rearward to remove it. Other models put the lock cylinder in the liftgate.
Opening the door with the key can trigger a pre-alarm on some models, with the horn chirping and the lights flashing. If the car isn't started within 10 seconds, the full alarm sounds, so have the fob in hand and know where the backup spot is before you open the door. Starting the car turns the alarm off.
The backup spot is a pocket inside the center console, under the storage tray, on some models. On others it's the rear cupholder, with the fob's buttons facing down. Set the fob there, and with the car in Park, press the brake and the start button. Your owner's manual shows the spot for your model. For 2008 and newer models, the manual is also in the myCadillac app, which helps when you're standing in a parking lot without it. Replace the battery as soon as you can.
It depends on the model. Many Cadillac fobs take a CR2032 lithium battery, and some newer models take a CR2450.
Your owner's manual lists the type for your fob, so use that one and no other. Cadillac's manuals caution that replacing the battery with an incorrect type could create a risk of battery explosion. The manual for at least one newer model goes further and says only Panasonic CR2450 batteries have been validated for it.
You can swap it at home with the right coin battery and, for some fobs, a thin flat tool.
Avoid touching the circuit board while the fob is open, because static from your hands can damage it. Close the case carefully, since a case that isn't sealed can let water in and damage the board.
A fob may need to be replaced when a fresh battery doesn't help and your spare fob works normally. Before you decide, open the fob again and confirm the battery is facing the right way and the case snapped fully shut.
Then try the spare. If it starts the car and the first fob still doesn't, the first fob may be faulty and need to be replaced and programmed to your car. If the spare fails the same way, even from the backup spot, the car itself needs a look.
On some models you can, if you already have two working fobs. Only fobs programmed to your car will work with it, and each car can have up to eight.
On those models, you need your two working fobs and the new one with you, and your owner's manual walks through every step. Without two working fobs, the same models have a longer procedure that takes about 30 minutes and erases every fob the car knew, so each fob you want to keep has to be programmed again during it. Some newer models list dealer programming only.
If a fob is lost or stolen, the car can be reprogrammed so that fob no longer works, and the fobs you still have are reprogrammed along with it.
At Cadillac of Murfreesboro Service Center, we can check whether the problem is the fob or the car. When no fob will start the car, the fault can be in the theft-deterrent system, and we can service that system.
We also program replacement and extra fobs. Bring every fob you have to the appointment, plus the key card if your car came with one.
If getting the car here is the problem, our Cadillac Mobile Service van can handle key fob work at your home or workplace, where local laws and property rules allow it. Ask our team what that covers for your Cadillac. Where they don't, we can pick the car up instead.
